Long Weekend Thoughts + Currently

Happy Monday! Last week I ended up taking an unintentional break from the blog, which I always kind of hate. It was just one of those weeks--my mom left on Tuesday morning, which kind of threw me off my schedule (and gave me a case of the blues), then I was busy with cookbook stuff for a few days, I shot a new recipe I wanted to share here but didn't like the pictures enough to post them, and finally Rob's oldest brother and his family came to visit us for the weekend on Friday. We had such a great time with them, but I'm happy that today is a holiday so we can all take some time to regroup and get organized for several weeks of regular life.

Since I was feeling a little uninspired on the blog front, I thought I'd ease back into it by sharing some other things that I've been up to lately. It's been months since my last Currently... post, so now seems like as good a time as any!

Thinking about spring and all the feelings I always feel when it comes around. I've been really homesick for Charlotte these last few weeks, and I think a lot of it is because it's been so beautiful here in the Bay Area. We had a ton of rain recently (and are in the middle of another wet spell right now), but for a few days last week it was sunny and warm and made me wish I was in my old neighborhood, walking to get coffee with a friend or teaching SkillPop classes again.

Listening to The Hamilton Mixtape. Can't get enough. We're seeing Hamilton this summer in San Francisco and I'm so excited about it.

Watching the new season of Girls. I forgot it started last week so Rob and I caught up last night and I was laughing so hard (also crying, whatever). It's one of my favorite shows and I can't believe this is the last season!

Reading lots of stuff, for the first time in a while. Joining a book club has been so great for me lately because I was really on a no-reading streak for a while and it was bothering me. Right now I'm reading White Teeth, and before that we did The Wangs vs. The World, Modern Lovers, and Mischling (affiliate links). All very different, but all written by women--that's kind of our thing. That, and frittatas.

Eating one of these fat bombs with a cup of tea every afternoon.

Drinking Cherry Lime La Croix Curate like it's going out of style. It tastes like a Slurpee and I'm into it.

Looking forward to finally zeroing in on a functioning capsule wardrobe, seeing my second cookbook in print, going to Lake Tahoe with Rob and Ender at the beginning of March, and our third wedding anniversary in a couple months--can you believe it? I think we're going to go to Santa Barbara for a long weekend, so if you have any recommendations I'd love to hear them!

What are you currently thinking about, listening to, watching, reading, eating, drinking, and looking forward to? I'm sorry I've been so absent lately! I'm trying not to post just because I haven't posted in a few days; but I always love hearing from you, so let me know!

Thinking about our move to California--it's coming up so soon! I'm excited about our cross-country road trip and getting settled in the Bay Area, but I'm also really sad to be leaving so many wonderful friends and our family on the East Coast.

Listening to Regina Spektor's new song so much. I can't wait for the full album!

Watching the Olympics! Swimming and gymnastics are my favorite. I love it all so much. Also re-watching Parks and Rec from the beginning; and do you guys remember The Secret Life of the American Teenager? It's cringeworthy but I can't stop. The whole thing is like a really bad, super cheesy PSA to teenagers everywhere about not having sex until you're married.

Drinking iced coffee, Spindrift soda water (I love the cucumber and the watermelon ones the most), and Lenny Boy kombucha (the rose was always my favorite but now I'm all about the dry hop).

Reading my cookbook...is that weird? My publisher sent me some author copies so I've been flipping through and re-reading all the headnotes and recipes I wrote this spring. It was such a crazy experience, and I can't believe my book will be in stores so soon. Other books I have my eye on: It's Okay To Laugh (Crying Is Cool Too) and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

Looking forward to spending the next week in California! I'm flying out this afternoon and Rob and I are doing some house hunting in the Bay Area through the weekend before heading to the city for a few days, then we're both coming home to Charlotte next weekend. I'm really excited to get out there and do some exploring! Feel free to follow along on Instagram and Snapchat (username is flynnmd)! I love Snapchat especially when I'm traveling.

What have you been up to lately?

Thinking about our new home! We found another house and signed the lease this week. We're officially moving in on May 1 but can start moving our stuff next week, and our subleasers aren't taking over our apartment until the 15th, which should hopefully make the whole moving process a little easier. I never know if fast and furious or slowly but surely is the way to do it, but either way moving is pretty much always the worst. We'll only be ten minutes from where we are now, but part of me is really sad to not be living in South End anymore. The other (larger) part of me is excited for a big bright kitchen, and office, and a fenced-in backyard.

Listening to On Being with Krista Tippett. What an interesting show. It is so incredibly thoughtful and I always walk away feeling like I've learned something really deep and important. I'm currently in the middle of this episode and it's really cool.

Watching Flaked on Netflix. I really like Will Arnett. We also just finished Cooked a couple weeks ago and it was so good--if you're at all interested in food, science, and/or cultural studies you might really like it. Watch the fourth episode about cheese and come back so we can talk about how cool that cheese-making nun is.

(Not) reading anything. It's terrible. I borrowed A Moveable Feast from the library but I still have to finish it--I just never make time to read anymore. What are some of your favorite books you've read lately? I need to start a reading hour every day. It's been too long since I read a full book--I want to hear your suggestions!

Eating rice cakes with some mayo and sliced turkey. Oh my gosh. It's the simplest snack but for some reason it's delicious. I thought maybe I was just boring but I started making them for Rob as well and he loves them just as much. You have to try it.

Looking forward to this weekend! All of Rob's brothers will be here (all four of them are hardly ever in the same place at the same time) and I get to see my nephews, one of whom I haven't even met yet--everyone went to Arizona to see them last fall but I was in Virginia helping my mom after her first surgery. It will be so good to see everyone. I haven't seen my sister-in-law, brother-in-law, and other nephew since our wedding almost two years ago.
