What I've Been Reading/Watching/Loving Lately
As we approach our fifth month of social distancing and more or less still sheltering in place, I thought it’d be fun to share a few things I’ve been enjoying lately. One perk of having so much extra time at home has definitely been reading again. I’d love to know what’s on your Reading/Watching/Loving Lately list, too—especially if there’s a show or movie you recommend! I truly cannot watch How I Met Your Mother again.
Reading:
How to Talk so Kids Will Listen: This book is really old school in a lot of ways (the examples and questions from clients make me cringe a little bit), but the advice is really solid and I love it. Basically, listen to your kids, validate their feelings, and treat them like people. A lot of the issues are a little older than toddler years (there is a How to Talk to (Little) Kids Will Listen that I have skimmed through and might read again), but I am learning a lot that can be applied to my parenting right now.
Eyes to the Wind: A Memoir of Love and Death, Hope and Resistance: This is Ady Barkan’s memoir and I’m really taking my time with it. I love hearing from him on Twitter and whenever he is a guest on Pod Save America, so I was excited to get his book. He is truly an inspiration.
I’m Still Here: Black Dignity in a World Made for Whiteness: I just ordered this one and can’t wait for it to get here. Reading and learning from Black writers is something that I have not been good about, and I want to make space for that.
Watching:
Barry: After months of re-watching familiar shows because we didn’t want to commit to anything new, Rob and I are really enjoying this, which is different than most of the things we usually choose. I love Bill Hader and we’re only five or six episodes in but I really like it so far.
Loving:
Sourdough toast with avocado, lemon, and Everything But the Bagel Seasoning (still!)
These CBD bath salts, which might almost turn me into a Bath Person
How much Sophie talks these days (the other day at breakfast she asked Rob “How are you feeling today dada?”)
This new vacuum that has turned me into someone who vacuums my kitchen counter
Waking up really early and walking Ender 3 miles before anyone wakes up
A few other things I’ve been up to: actually folding laundry when it comes out of the dryer, daydreaming about spending autumn on the East Coast, grocery shopping as rarely as possible, selling random things in our garage on Facebook Marketplace, and getting more excited than I ever thought I would about cute face masks.
