Our Upstairs Neighbors

For a few weeks, Rob and I have been noticing that it sounds like whoever lives upstairs is constantly wrestling with each other, running laps around the living room, or taking turns throwing themselves off of various pieces of furniture. We're a pretty easy-going couple, and we like to have a good time just as much as the next person. So we let it go, just looking at each other with irritated glances instead of trying to do something about the problem.

Last week, it finally got to the point where we decided to go upstairs and meet them/let them know how damn loud they are. I felt sort of uncomfortable about it, but it was getting ridiculous and I think that if I lived above people and I was making that much noise, I'd want to know so I could be a little more careful about when and where I jumped around.

So we knocked on the door, and I was surprised to find that the people who live above us are, in fact, people, and not actually a small family of baby elephants working on a couple Bachelor's degrees from UVA at night or something.

We had a quick, nice conversation with a baby-faced college junior who asked "Oh, are we being too loud?" in a whiny voice over music and giggles in the background. We let her know that we could hear every step she and her roommates took, and obviously there was nothing that anyone could do about that, but could they please keep whatever gymnastics they do all day to a minimum?

Two days later, there was more jumping, things crashing to the floor, and a constant bang bang BANG all across our ceiling. It was a Thursday night and Rob had a bunch of work to get done before 12AM, and he was having a lot of trouble concentrating. So back upstairs we went. The second roommate answered the door and informed us of two things with an annoyed smirk on her face.
  1. They can also hear the people upstairs, but THEY don't go knock on their door every time it gets loud.
  2. She was having a party for her birthday tomorrow and she was absolutely NOT going to ask her guests to tread lightly across her floors.
We let them party and dance and blast music and have screaming contests until 2AM. We didn't go upstairs, and we didn't even complain about it to each other. But some people have to work really early in the morning, even though it's the weekend in a college town. People like us.

So happy birthday baby elephant, and thanks for the broken bottles and trash you threw onto our front porch.
Happy birthday from me and Rob and that nice police officer we had delivered, just for you, at your party last night.

haha love it. we had elephants that lived above us at JMU and we would just bang things on the ceiling haha..but it didnt work. I wonder if they got a noise violation?
I wanted to call the cops last night here, there was a party in the building right beside mine and some guy was in the parking lot on a MEGAPHONE at 1:30 in the am..i thought it was a cop at first but then he starting yelling girls names telling them they looked hott..and then said "attention walmart customers..." and THEN put his megaphone up to the car radio... clearly respect and the face that some people are trying to sleep at 1:30a is a foreign concept.

We had problems with that last year but with music. I don't know if they moved out or if me asking the landlord to talk them quieted them. (I did go up to ask myself but they never answered the door even though I could HEAR their ridiculously loud music through the door). I'm sorry. That's really awkward and I think that since you asked nicely twice you did the right thing by calling the cops.

Go you! I remember Junior year in college we had freshmen above us in the dorm. It was awful. It sounded like they were juggling bowling balls while teaching elephants to ride unicycles. Needless to say, they weren't -- they were just crushing on basketball players who would come over and dribble their ball. Like it was no big deal.

I'm glad you called the cops. That sounds like an awesomely adequate birthday present.

ugh. the worst part about apartment living. living in close quarters with the general public. Why do the gymnasts always live on the top floor? We have also experienced a wannabe rockstar: who practiced his drums at all hours of the day/night. We pretty much threw a party the day he moved out:-) xoxo

We're in a terrace house so we don't quite have elephants running across the ceiling but we do regularly hear the yelling matches. The house on our left (as you stand facing our house) regularly yell at each other - one particular day I was in the bathroom and I could hear the Mum shouting at her son (his bedroom is the other side of our bathroom wall) but I was genuinely worried for his safety this time because there was swearing in the shouting as well rather than just the normal yelling.

On the other side it's the other extreme we often hear the Mum and her daughter laughing their socks off! One night I listened to X Factor through the wall rather than switching my TV on it was on that loud lol.

Get it girl! You did the right thing - you talked to them in person first. After that, you only have so many options.
